That Oppa didn’t mean it chat floating around is great. I think we could tack on a few lines though to make it extra authentic.

Fan: I don’t mean It when I spit on you, when I throw things at you, when I stalk you, when I stand outside your dorm in my free time.

Oppa: Of course not, you’re my fan.

Fan: I don’t mean it when I tell you to kill yourself or dehumanize you for my own amusement. I don’t mean it when I try to touch you or forget that personal boundaries are things that exist. I’m your fan, I bought your album, that means I own you. I can do whatever I want. You can’t though, you have no inherent value beyond property so fundamental rights, pshh, who needs those.

Oppa: No, I get it.

Fan: I don’t mean it when I stalk your friends and your family and spread career-threatening tales about you on the internet for attention. It’s just … I love you SO much that any and all of my actions are excusable because I mean well.


Oppa: No you’d be a piece of shit if you did all that.

Fan: I know! But I don’t do any of that, because I’m a fan: The peak of societal accomplishment. You should really adhere to my strict moral standards. Your principles are nothing compared to my own.

If Idols behave inappropriately, if they flout their responsibilities as inadvertent role models that’s obviously terrible. It’s unfortunate. It’s life. I’m not going to defend their actions if they’re reprehensible.

BUT, the way some fans wipe their hands of their idols after disreputable behaviour while completely ignoring the reality of their own skewed moral compass is amazing.

This obviously doesn’t apply to everyone, but there are so many fans out there who have done UNCONSCIONABLE things to their idols, violating their basic human rights time and time again, and they don’t hold themselves to any account.

Your idol can be a piece of shit but you can’t.

You do everything right.

You’re a fan so you can do whatever, SAY whatever, whenever you want, safe from the fear of retribution BECAUSE YOU’RE A FAN or because you’re young.

Being a fan doesn’t give you an automatic free pass or a pedestal from which to spew forth your own ideas of morality. NOR is it okay to poke and prod and antagonize your idols safe in the knowledge that they’re unable to retaliate or defend themselves. / I can understand if you want your idol to notice you, but to willfully provoke them is un-fucking-acceptable. /

I see so many kpop fans being unconscionable c**ts about idols they dislike for the mere fact of being a c**t. Because it’s cool and it’s funny to indulge yourself in some clever repartee. We all do it at some point or another, I know. But to do that and then turn around and judge an idol by a set of standards so far removed from anything by which you’d judge yourself is fucking stupid. Yes, they’re in a position of influence but so are you.

If anything, the KPOP fandom at large have more influence in Korea than any idol. I mean for fucks sake, petty bullying drives some idols to suicide? YOUR OPINIONS (and often actions) HOLD AS MUCH WEIGHT AS THE OPINIONS OF ANY OF THESE PEOPLE.

The sort of immature puerile bullshit I see sometimes online is infectious. You plant the seeds of immaturity in others.

I would say ‘Judge others the way you judge yourself’ but nobody does that, myself included. Alas, hypocrisy.

Précis;

That you could stalk an idol one day or write essays about how fat, how ugly, how talentless they’ve become and the next day call another idol out on what a piece of shit they are .. like … DO YOU NOT SEE THE PROBLEM?

Yes, your idol can be a piece of shit, but fuck …. so can you.
